Try This!

A Clearinghouse of Ideas for Better Connecting and Gathering

Bringing our communities and planet together in these challenging times requires both an intentional approach and a willingness to experiment. What worked even a decade or two ago (Remember when nearly everyone hung out at the shopping mall?) might need updating today.

This page contains three lists of different ways to connect with other people, to gather together, and to grow your relationship with God. Eventually, many of the items on these lists will contain links to blog posts or other resources that will provide more information and examples. You are invited to submit your own ideas by leaving a message via the Contact page or by writing a comment on the “Try This!” blog post: https://regatheringproject.com/?p=78

  • Go out of your comfort zone to connect with someone who differs widely from you and your typical friends.
  • Write a handwritten note to someone expressing gratitude for who they are and what they have meant to you.
  • Conduct a technology “audit” to see how much of your time with your devices is spent interacting with others. Brainstorm ways to improve.
  • Become a “blast from the past” as you attempt to reconnect with one or more relationships that have become inactive.
  • MORE TO COME
  • Invite two or more people for coffee who don’t know each other and introduce them.
  • Create a neighborhood gathering appropriate for where you live.
  • Join or start a small group, especially one that fits your areas of interest.
  • Take a mindful, even prayerful, stroll around your neighborhood, community, workplace or school, noticing the people and the places they gather.
  • MORE TO COME

[I understand those who might wonder how this list fits with the rest of the project, especially if you’ve been hurt by people who claimed to be “religious” but acted in an unloving manner. As one who has facilitated spiritual life retreats where participants spent extended time in God’s presence, I’ve seen the other side. When a person experiences the presence, love, and wholehearted acceptance of God, the ability to love and accept others often becomes easier. Try these practices only if you feel comfortable doing so.]

  • Try to carve out at least 20 to 30 minutes of quiet time every day for prayer, meditation, Bible/devotional/inspirational reading, etc.
  • Spend time outside (or in a room with a great view) enjoying creation with its Creator.
  • Start each morning (and consider ending each evening) with a time of gratitude, giving thanks to God for some of the many blessing you have received.
  • MORE TO COME
